Does translating a chat widget translate the support conversation?
No. Translating a chat widget changes interface text such as buttons and form labels; it does not automatically translate an agent’s messages, knowledge articles, or AI answers. Evaluate these language capabilities separately and test the entire conversation in each language you intend to support.
Which language layers are different?
The interface, customer messages, agent replies, and knowledge each have their own language. A translated launcher may make the site feel welcoming while the subsequent answer remains in English. State the supported experience clearly so customers do not infer capabilities from the interface alone.
How should you test language selection?
Test an explicit site setting, any embed override, and the browser’s language preferences. Include regional variants and an unsupported language. Check required consent wording and custom text too: overriding one label may leave the rest of the interface in a different language.
What should the support team prepare?
Choose which languages your people can handle and how unsupported requests will be followed up. If using external translation, verify important amounts, dates, names, and policy terms. Machine-generated wording should not change an exception or promise that the source did not contain.
Practical checklist
- Separate interface language from reply language.
- Test browser and explicit locale settings.
- Review custom text and consent wording.
- Communicate which languages your team can support.
Worked example
A French browser displays French form labels, but a question about account access still needs an answer in a language the service supports. Test that path before advertising the entire service as multilingual.
How Fire Away fits
Fire Away’s widget interface includes English, French, German, Spanish and Dutch, with configurable strings and locale selection. That interface list is not a claim of live agent translation or equivalent AI support in every language.
