# How do you stop two agents answering the same chat?

Prevent duplicate replies by combining visible ownership with awareness of who is viewing or composing in a conversation. Assignment tells the team who is responsible; presence and draft indicators show what is happening now. Agree on a handover routine so those signals lead to coordinated action.

## Why is assignment alone insufficient?

An assigned agent may be away, investigating elsewhere, or actively drafting. A second teammate cannot infer which from a name alone. Treat ownership as responsibility for follow-through while checking current activity before sending another customer-facing answer.

## How should a second agent help?

Read the conversation and inspect any teammate activity first. Add a private note if you have useful context. If a response is urgent and you need to take over, coordinate the change and make sure the first agent knows so two different answers do not arrive seconds apart.

## What happens during a shift change?

Leave a concise update describing what has been checked, what remains, and who should reply next. Reassign deliberately. A stale owner without a next step creates false confidence that work is handled, even when nobody is actively progressing it.

## Practical checklist

- Check the owner before replying.
- Look for another agent viewing or drafting.
- Use a private note to contribute context.
- Explicitly coordinate takeovers and shift changes.

## Worked example

Two agents open a new chat. One begins a reply; the other sees the draft and checks the customer’s earlier messages instead. They add a note with the missing context, allowing the first agent to send one complete answer.

## How Fire Away fits

Fire Away shows teammate presence and live drafts to agents. Its soft assignment helps coordinate ownership while allowing another permitted teammate to respond when needed.
